The African National Congress (ANC) in Gauteng has announced Councillor Hassan Mako as its Executive Mayoral Candidate for the Emfuleni Local Municipality ahead of upcoming local government elections.
The announcement was made by the ANC Gauteng Provincial Task Team (PTT), which said the decision followed an internal selection process led by the party’s national office bearers. According to the party, the process included rigorous interviews after three nominations were received from the ANC Sedibeng Regional Executive Committee.
Mako is described by the ANC as an experienced community development practitioner and local government leader. He currently serves as a Ward Councillor for Ward 37 in Emfuleni and previously held the position of Member of the Mayoral Committee (MMC) for Finance in the municipality.
The party further highlighted Mako’s long-standing involvement in ANC structures. He rose through the ranks of the ANC Youth League, where he served in various leadership roles including Branch Secretary, Branch Chairperson, and Zonal Chairperson.
Within the broader ANC organisational structure, Mako has also served as a member of both the Branch Executive Committee and the Sedibeng Regional Executive Committee. At a recent regional conference, he was elected Regional Treasurer.
The ANC said the appointment reflects its focus on strengthening local government performance and improving service delivery in municipalities facing governance and service delivery challenges.
“The ANC remains committed to fixing local government and building an economy that works for all,” the party said in its statement.
ANC Secretary-General Fikile Mbalula announced the newly reconfigured ANC Gauteng PTT at the Gauteng Provincial Legislature last month.
The team was assembled to try rebuild party structures, restore declining electoral fortunes, and drive preparations for the 2026 Local Government Elections.
