The African National Congress (ANC) National Executive Committee (NEC) reconvened its meeting on Sunday in Boksburg, Ekurhuleni, following an adjournment on Friday to allow members to attend the funeral service of the late MP Violet Siwela in Bushbuckridge, in Mpumalanga.

Siwela, who passed away a week ago after spending a few days in hospital, was laid to rest on Saturday where Deputy President Paul Mashatile delivered a eulogy.

The meeting comes two weeks after the party held its 8 January statement celebrations in Mbombela, Mpumalanga. Among other matters, the meeting is expected to discuss former president Jacob Zuma and deliberate on his future with the party.

Addressing hundreds of volunteers in Orlando, Soweto on Saturday ANC Secretary General Fikile Mbalula said the ruling party was disappointed in the former leader.

According to Mbalula, Zuma is still a member of the ruling party, but a decision will be taken in Boksburg. He also told the supporters that they are taking Zuma to court to challenge him using the ANC’s trademark, adding that the former president is free to launch his new party, but must not use their trademark.

Zuma announced in December last year that he will not vote for the ANC and will not campaign for it in the next general elections to be held in a few months but instead, he will vote for the newly formed uMkhonto Wesizwe party (MK).

The former statesman has already started campaigning for the MK. Meanwhile, the meeting is also expected to discuss the outcome of the International Court of Justice ruling, current domestic political landscape, report of the integrity commission of the ANC, and the consideration of the Western Cape Provincial Powers Bill, among others.
