North West ANC members who were not happy about the selection of the candidate list for the 2021 Local Government Elections, will by the end of June, get feedback on the implementation of the Kgalema Motlanthe report.
Next week the team will meet with the affected councilors who had been asked to bring along proof that indeed they were elected by the communities in the wards that they are serving.
The ANC NEC established a task team led by Motlanthe, who is also an ANC’s electoral committee head – to investigate and establish facts about what actually happened when some party members discovered that there were ANC councilors who were wrongfully put on the lists instead of the ones chosen by members of the community.
Today the ANC National Investigative team led by former Communications Minister Dina Pule was in Rustenburg meeting with all former Interim Regional Committee structures to conduct the outstanding hearings.
Two weeks ago the National Working Committee (NWC) visited the province to check the state of the regions ahead of the 2024 National Elections.
The NWC found that there were still divisions among party members and the issue of manipulation of the candidate list was at the top among concerns raised where party members demanded the implementation of the Kgalema Motlanthe report.
Disgruntled ANC members had before the 2021 Local Government Elections accused the party of failing to rectify its councilor candidate selection process ahead of the elections.
“You would remember that there were many people who were complaining about the fact that some of the councilor candidates that were eventually included in the list were not candidates that were selected by the communities and then the leadership through president Kgamela Motlanthe indicated that after the elections we will come back and verify as to what happened.
“Once we get the information we will then take it back to the leadership and the leadership will take a decision. We are hoping to have a very good outcome out of the meeting,” Pule said.
The matter has left ANC members divided, nearly two years after the local government elections, with countless court cases filed before the North West High Court.
Despite Motlanthe’s assurance that the election committee will institute an internal disciplinary process to get to the bottom of this, disgruntled councilors said nothing happened and the ANC used them, saying nobody wants to take responsibility for the matter.
One of the disgruntled party members Pakiso Mqikela said they were happy there is progress and said they appreciated the efforts of the team and hoped the matter will be resolved.
