Acting North West Premier Nono Maloyi has promised residents of Tswelelang outside Wolmaransstad, North West that he will ensure they have access to clean water and decent housing. Scores of Expanded Public Works Programme participants marched to the North West Premier’s office, demanding that the government integrate them into the employment system permanently. This comes after they were told last month that the Department of Public Works and Roads intends to terminate their contracts. Their contracts expired in July, but a three-month extension was granted when the workers mounted a protest. The workers say that a three-month extension was insufficient, and they need a twelve-month extension while the government considers permanent job possibilities for them. Some parents of learners at the Welgevonden Primary School outside Ventersdorp in the North West have alleged that the instant porridge mix supplied by the school’s nutrition programme to feed the learners has expired. Traffic officers at the Klerksdorp-based City of Matlosana Local Municipality in the North West, have been left stranded without means of transport after the municipality confiscated eight vehicles this morning. The municipality took the vehicles because it accused the officers of failing to do their duties because they went on strike. The North West Department of Health says it will be deploying armed guards to escort paramedics when they go into gang-infested Kanana and Jouberton townships of Klerksdorp. This follows Sunday’s attack on two paramedics both of whom were women, who were responding to a call in Jouberton. Five people were killed in an accident on the R49 road between Zeerust and Mahikeng on Monday morning. According to the North West Department of Community Safety and Transport, the accident occurred shortly after midnight on the Riviera Park bridge near the Rugby Stadium. The North West Department of Education has condemned the burning of a classroom at the Vaal Reefs Technical School outside Orkney. The incident took place on Wednesday, during a matric learners’ festival called 40 days of corruption – an annual tradition the learners use to celebrate the last days of the academic year before the final exam. It is alleged that the learners set fire to one of the classrooms as part of the celebration. The Klerksdorp magistrates court released on warning eight suspected gang members who were arrested last week on various offenses including public violence and malicious damage to property at the City of Matlosana Local Municipality. The group was arrested on Wednesday following an incident in which they allegedly stormed Matlosana municipal offices demanding jobs.
