Residents of Kanana outside Orkney in the North West have barricaded the R30 with burning tyres and stones demanding RDP houses, water, and toilets.
The community said it has been living in Extension 15, Kanana, for almost ten years but still lacks basic services and complained that the local councilor Queen Mahumapelo was taking too long to resolve their service delivery issues.
“Our councilor comes to our area and promises us a lot of services with time frames, but she never follows through. The previous ward councilor had done the same thing. We now want someone from the province or the mayor to come in and tell us where the truth is,” said Kanana community member Moses Ortman.
Another resident Keorapetse Mabango said the government has forgotten them. “We do not have roads, toilets, or houses . We feel lost, this is not making us happy. The councilor promised us in April that by June we will at least have water meter boxes and also an update on the housing project. We are in July and nothing is happening,” she said.
The ward councilor Queen Mahumaprlo agreed that the area needs the much needed services and said she has been engaging with authorities at the North West Department of Human Settlement and they promised a contractor will soon be appointed.
“I was expecting the contractor in June but it did not happen. I wanted to go back to the community only when the contractor was coming on site, for now my hands are also tied,” she said.
