Argentina footballer Lucas Trejo is mourning the loss of his wife and two children after they were killed in the devastating earthquakes that struck Venezuela this week.

The tragedy comes as the death toll from the twin earthquakes has climbed above 1,400, with rescue teams continuing to search for survivors in the hardest-hit areas.

Trejo’s family were among the victims after the powerful earthquakes reduced buildings to rubble, leaving thousands dead or missing. Messages of support have poured in from across the football community as the player grieves the loss of his loved ones.

Rescue operations remain underway in La Guaira, where more than 1,600 international emergency workers have joined local teams in the race to locate survivors. Authorities say the chances of finding people alive are diminishing as time passes.

The earthquakes have also left tens of thousands of people unaccounted for, with families anxiously awaiting news of missing relatives as recovery efforts continue.
