American pop and R&B star Ariana Grande has reassured fans that her decision to take a break from the spotlight was not influenced by recent criticism surrounding her physical appearance.

The Grammy-winning singer announced through her team that she would step away from public appearances after completing her tour, prompting speculation among some fans that the decision was linked to renewed online scrutiny about her appearance and health.

The speculation intensified following the release of a promotional video for her latest album, Petal, in which Grande portrays a performer who repeatedly faces rejection during auditions and is told she is not good enough.

While many viewers connected with the message of the video, others criticised the production team and questioned why she was presented in a way they perceived as concerning.

Addressing fans during a performance on her Eternal Sunshine Tour in Chicago, Grande said her decision to take a break was made long before the recent online discussions.

“This is something I decided — a plan I quietly made a long time ago, from a thoughtful and empowered place,” she told the audience.

Grande added that she wanted to reassure fans who believed online negativity had influenced her decision.

“Multiple things can be true at once: boundaries need to be set, and sometimes people need a break. No matter what noise exists out there, nothing can distort my reality or be more real to me than the love we share in this room,” she said.

The renewed focus on Grande’s appearance has also reignited broader conversations about body image, online criticism and the pressure placed on women in the public eye.

Advocates say the discussion highlights the importance of promoting body positivity, empathy and respect, while encouraging women to embrace and take ownership of their bodies without fear of public judgement.
