Aston Villa ended a 30-year wait for silverware with a commanding 3-0 victory over SC Freiburg in the Europa League final on Wednesday, producing a dominant display inspired by standout goals from Youri Tielemans and Emiliano Buendía.
Unai Emery once again underlined his reputation as one of Europe’s most successful cup managers, securing a record-extending fifth Europa League triumph as Villa claimed their first major trophy since 1996.
Villa took control of the final just before half-time when Tielemans met a cleverly worked corner routine, finishing emphatically with a low volley to break the deadlock. Moments later, Buendía doubled the lead with a superb curling strike from the edge of the area, leaving the goalkeeper with no chance.
Morgan Rogers added a third in the second half, finishing from close range after Buendía delivered a low cross into the six-yard box to seal a comprehensive win.
The result marked Aston Villa’s first continental trophy since their European Cup triumph in 1982, and their first major domestic or European honour in nearly three decades.
Emery’s success further cements his extraordinary European record, placing him alongside some of the competition’s most decorated managers with multiple continental titles across different clubs.
Freiburg, chasing their first major trophy in over a century of history, struggled to impose themselves and rarely threatened Villa’s defence as the Premier League side controlled the match from start to finish.
