Outside the Gauteng Department of Health, hundreds of Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF) activists have assembled and are requesting that all children be assigned to schools.
According to the party, there are 2,000 kids in the province who have yet to find a school. The education department, however, contests this number.
Nkululeko Dunga, the regional head of the EFF, claimed that the party had received complaints from parents who claimed that their kids were staying home instead of attending school.
“It is an unconstitutional thing for any student to not have a basic right to free and quality education, and that is what we are moving with as the EFF, and why we are here.”
While there were capacity difficulties, according to Department spokesperson Steve Mabona, all students in grades one through eight have been assigned to a school.
“We came forth to say we are challenged in certain areas. We were honest and we have identified where we were challenged.”
Mabona noted difficulties at Kempton Park, where parents of roughly 300 kids were delaying enrolling them in a new satellite school out of concern for their safety.
