The African Transformation Movement (ATM) has proposed for racism to be criminalized in South Africa.

The party’s stance is in response to an incident which is reported to have taken place at Food Lover’s Market, in Sandton, where a white couple allegedly referred to another black couple as baboons.

The video of the incident which has since gone viral sparked outrage on X.

ATM spokesperson, Zama Ntshona said decisive action must be taken to address racists.

“Racism in this country is a persistent issue, with incidents occurring in schools, universities and communities.

The entitlement displayed by individuals who believe they can demean others based on the colour of their skin must be met with accountability and legal repercussions,” said Ntshona.

The party described racism as a significant violation of the Bill of Rights.

“Section 9 of the Constitution prohibits direct or indirect unfair discrimination against anyone on the grounds of race, ethnic or social origin, colour, culture, language and birth.

This legal framework establishes racism as an affront to human rights and dignity,” Ntshona explained.

Even thirty years into the country’s democracy, South Africa is still grappling with the legacy of racism.

In 2024 alone, there have been numerous cases including the one involving the DA’s former MP, Renaldo Gouws.

The ATM has implored on all South Africans to stand united against racism, and not allow the actions of a few to undo the achievements of addressing segregation and oppression.
