The government has taken the first step towards normalising relations between warring black and white residents of Hartbeestpoort who are divided over access to the lucrative dam. The newly formed coalition government of the City of Tshwane has expressed confidence it will turn around the metro’s fortunes within the limited period it has before the next local government elections. Mayor Nasiphi Moya and her executive on Wednesday presented their plans for the next 100 days. Moya said her team has set as key priority, the stabilisation of the municipality’s finances. The ANC is hoping its foundation phase political education course will improve the conduct of its members and improve the party’s fortunes. The party launched the course during its national executive committee meeting held in Boksburg on Monday and said the move is part of several initiatives aimed at renewal. The course is the brainchild of the principal of the ANC’s OR Tambo School of Politics and will be compulsory for leaders and members to attend as well as to complete. The National Prosecuting Authority has defended itself against allegations of bias. The claims against the prosecuting body were triggered by its failure to see through some of the major cases it has undertaken. The South African Federation of Trade Unions has called out the Government of National Unity accusing it of pursuing anti-poor economic policies that it said have only served to worsen inequalities. The federation briefed the media at its offices on Tuesday where it called for the entire labour movement to join it in mobilising the ‘working class and the poor’ to resist the direction being taken by the government.
