Education authorities in Gauteng have expressed confidence that the schools of specialisation will help the province achieve a hundred percent pass rate and produce that will provide solutions to the country’s problems. Gauteng Education MEC Matome Chiloane will open yet another state-of-the-art school as part of a provincial government drive to accelerate the rollout of public infrastructure. Thuto-Tiro Engineering School of Specialisation is the 33rd such institution in the province and a third school to be opened this year. Kgatoentle Secondary School in Ga-Rankuwa was officially opened in January and most recently, the provincial government handed over the newly refurbished multimillion Mayibuye Primary School in Tembisa. The DA-led coalition government of financially distressed City of Tshwane has denied opposition claims that it is serving affluent areas while neglecting poor black communities. Mayor Celliers Brink briefed the media alongside other members of his executive on Monday and argued it is actually the affluent areas that are underserviced. The Gender Equality Commission wants the government to think carefully before signing international treaties in order to avoid being part of arrangements that end up hurting South Africa’s own national interests. The commission has joined forces with rights groups to raise funds to help double olympic gold medalist Caster Semenya for her upcoming case at the European Court of Human Rights. City Power has denied that its meter readings were faulty resulting in customers being overcharged significantly. The utility on Thursday embarked on a clampdown of defaulters in the Midrand area targeting mostly affluent residential complexes and a shopping centre. The Independent Electoral Commission has warned political parties and candidates against knowingly distributing false information about the upcoming national and provincial elections. The ANC has praised the South African Social Security Agency (SASSA) as being a well functioning state institution and directed higher education minister Blade Ndzimande to ensure that the National Student Financial Aid Scheme (NSFAS) disburse funds directly to students or through SASSA unlike the current arrangement where the function is outsourced.
