The North West Provincial Legislature Portfolio Committee on Premier, Finance, Cooperative Governance, Human Settlements and Traditional Affairs, has summoned the accounting officers at the Dr. Ruth Segomotsi Mompati District Municipality in Vryburg to appear before it on Friday, to explain the procurement of the controversial R38 million shack call centre at the municipality. This follows media reports that the struggling district municipality created a duplicate call centre with public funds that were meant for service delivery and erected the “call centre” on the municipality premises. President Cyril Ramaphosa has authorised the deployment of 3 300 members of the South African National Defence Force (SANDF) to work in conjunction with the South African Police Service (SAPS) to prevent and combat crime and maintain and preserve law and order under Operation Prosper. The operation, which began last month, was announced today by the Presidency. “Members of the SANDF will, in cooperation with the South African Police Service, conduct an intensified anti-criminality operation against illegal mining across all provinces, from 28 October 2023 until 28 April 2024,” said Presidency spokesperson, Vincent Magwenya. The South African football fraternity continues to mourn Amazulu striker Bonginkosi Ntuli, who sadly passed away at a Pietermaritzburg hospital on Sunday aged 32. The heartbreaking and shocking news were confirmed by the Durban club on their official X account, revealing that the striker had only been ill for a short period of time after he was recently diagnosed with an aggressive form of cancer. The case of rape, assault and attempted murder against TV presenter and musician, Molemo Maarohanye, popularly known as Jub Jub, has been postponed to 11 December by the Johannesburg Magistrates Court. Jub Jub handed himself over to the police in July, after a warrant of arrest was issued for incidents that allegedly took place in 2006 and 2009. The case against two suspects arrested in connection with the break-in at President Cyril Ramaphosa’s Phala Phala farm has been postponed until Friday 10 November, by the Bela Bela Magistrates Court in Limpopo. Froliana Josephand and Imanuwela David together with other unknown accomplices, are accused of breaking into the president farm in 2020 and stole $580 000, which is about R10 million at the current exchange rate. The suspects aged 30 and 39 were arrested on Sunday and Monday, in Rustenburg and Bela Bela respectively. Electricity Minister Kgosientsho Ramokgopa said it is unacceptable that Eskom has lost 17 300 megawatts due to outages, that resulted in the return of load shedding since last week. He said this is reversing most of the positive gains made by the utility in the past, to keep the loss at 14 500 megawatts as a benchmark. More than 250 people have been left homeless after a fire ravaged 45 shacks at the Plastic View informal settlement, east of Pretoria. According to the spokesperson of the Tshwane Emergency Services, Charles Mabaso, their officers arrived on the scene after 4pm and found multiple shacks on fire, they immediately started firefighting operations to prevent the spread of the fire. “One patient was treated and transported for smoke inhalation and moderate injuries. President Cyril Ramaphosa said it is time for the African continent to produce and refine its own materials, instead of exporting it to other countries. Ramaphosa was delivering a keynote address at the 20th African Growth and Opportunity Act (AGOA) in Nasrec, south of Johannesburg.
