The five people aboard the submersible that had been missing for days were killed when the small vessel carrying them to the Titanic wreckage site had a “catastrophic implosion,” the Coast Guard said Thursday afternoon. Members of a massive international search effort found a debris field in the general area of the Titanic earlier in the day, and it was confirmed to contain parts of the Titan sub. “The debris is consistent with a catastrophic implosion of the vessel,” Rear Adm. John Mauger, commander of the First Coast Guard District, said in a news conference. The debris was found about 1,600 feet from…
Springbok captain Siya Kolisi has calmed concerns about his fitness as he recovers from a knee injury ahead of this year’s Rugby World Cup. Kolisi is part of the 41-member squad in the Pretoria-based Springbok camp, as the team prepares for the Rugby Championship and World Cup. The Sharks captain went under the knife last month after suffering a knee ligament injury, while in action for the Durban-based side in the final round of the Vodacom United Rugby Championship. This is not the first time that the loose forward is struggling with injury ahead of a World Cup. In 2019…
In recent decades, data from sports researchers revealed an encouraging trend: young girls were participating in sports in greater numbers. But the research also uncovered a big missed opportunity. Girls drop out of sports at “alarming rates,” specifically when they hit puberty. There is one obvious solution that sports retail giant Nike CEO John Donahoe, and many others, think can make a big difference: more female coaches. In the historically male-dominated world of sports, girls and women have always had to fight for their right to compete and to be viewed as competitive athletes. The sexism that has prevented girls from competing…
South African President Cyril Ramaphosa – who is in Russia as part of a peace-seeking delegation – told his Russian counterpart Vladimir Putin that the war in Ukraine must stop. Ramaphosa laid out the 10 points of the African peace initiative that is seeking agreement on a series of “confidence-building measures” – even as Ukraine last week began a counteroffensive to push back Russian forces. “This war has to have an end… It must be settled through negotiations and through diplomatic means,” said Ramaphosa in St Petersburg on Saturday at the 18th-century Konstantinovsky Palace. He added his delegation, consisting of seven African leaders,…

Former Springbok winger, Aphiwe Dyantyi, is set to make his return to professional rugby following the end of his four-year doping suspension. Dyantyi was banned from rugby in December 2019 after he tested positive for performance-enhancing substances in August of that year. The 28-year-old also failed a doping test during a Springbok camp on the eve of their successful Rugby World Cup campaign in Japan. Following the end of his suspension, Dyantyi has officially signed with the Sharks and the Sharks CEO Eduard Coetzee said they wanted to give Dyantyi a “second chance”. “He was the best wing in the…
Percy Tau of Bafana Bafana says Al Ahly’s success in the CAF Champions League is a result of retaliation following Wydad Casablanca’s defeat in the previous edition. Tau expressed his joy at being a champion once more on SuperSport TV. “Our fans will be very touched by this.Even though this was a very different game than the one we lost to them in [the 2021/22 season final], we were aware of it. Then, we had to change our outlook. “We were aware that if we put more effort into it, the outcome [compared to the previous one-legged final] would always be different. Tau, who won his first Champions League medal with his former team Mamelodi Sundowns back in 2016, is the only player from South Africa to hold two medals from this prestigious competition. Tau helped Al Ahly win the Champions League for the 11th time by scoring five goals and providing five assists. Al Ahly defeated Wydad 3-2 on the road in the final on Sunday night in Casablanca.
South Africa is anticipated to lose its AGOA status, according to a group of US lawmakers from both the Democratic and Republican parties, who have petitioned the White House to shift this year’s AGOA summit elsewhere. 25% of South African exports to the US, SA’s second-largest trading partner after China, are allowed duty-free entry under AGOA. A report about the letter was first published in the New York Times on June 9. According to the New York Times, a bipartisan group of American legislators has urged the Biden administration to retaliate against South Africa for what it perceives to be the African nation’s backing of Russia’s conflict in Ukraine. According to the newspaper, this would be accomplished by switching the location of the AGOA trade conference from South Africa to another nation. According to the New York Times, the group of politicians made the request in a letter that was received last week. The South…
By Anja du Plessis A report released by the South African government paints a grim picture of the country’s water resources and water infrastructure as well as the overall quality of its drinking water. The Blue Drop Watch Report – an interim report because it only assessed a sample of the facilities across the country – focused on the condition of the drinking water infrastructure and treatment processes from a technical standpoint. It also reported on water quality. The issues of biggest concern that it identified included a collapse of the country’s wastewater treatment works and a sharp rise in…
