Percy Tau of Bafana Bafana says Al Ahly’s success in the CAF Champions League is a result of retaliation following Wydad Casablanca’s defeat in the previous edition. Tau expressed his joy at being a champion once more on SuperSport TV. “Our fans will be very touched by this.Even though this was a very different game than the one we lost to them in [the 2021/22 season final], we were aware of it. Then, we had to change our outlook. “We were aware that if we put more effort into it, the outcome [compared to the previous one-legged final] would always be different. Tau, who won his first Champions League medal with his former team Mamelodi Sundowns back in 2016, is the only player from South Africa to hold two medals from this prestigious competition. Tau helped Al Ahly win the Champions League for the 11th time by scoring five goals and providing five assists. Al Ahly defeated Wydad 3-2 on the road in the final on Sunday night in Casablanca.
South Africa is anticipated to lose its AGOA status, according to a group of US lawmakers from both the Democratic and Republican parties, who have petitioned the White House to shift this year’s AGOA summit elsewhere. 25% of South African exports to the US, SA’s second-largest trading partner after China, are allowed duty-free entry under AGOA. A report about the letter was first published in the New York Times on June 9. According to the New York Times, a bipartisan group of American legislators has urged the Biden administration to retaliate against South Africa for what it perceives to be the African nation’s backing of Russia’s conflict in Ukraine. According to the newspaper, this would be accomplished by switching the location of the AGOA trade conference from South Africa to another nation. According to the New York Times, the group of politicians made the request in a letter that was received last week. The South…
By Anja du Plessis A report released by the South African government paints a grim picture of the country’s water resources and water infrastructure as well as the overall quality of its drinking water. The Blue Drop Watch Report – an interim report because it only assessed a sample of the facilities across the country – focused on the condition of the drinking water infrastructure and treatment processes from a technical standpoint. It also reported on water quality. The issues of biggest concern that it identified included a collapse of the country’s wastewater treatment works and a sharp rise in…
Bafana Bafana coach Hugo Broos has named his 23-man squad to play Morocco in their final Group K Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) qualifier on June 17. The two nations are set to battle it out at the FNB stadium with kick-off set at 5pm, to determine the winner of Group K with both sides having sealed qualifications for the 2023 AFCON – which will be hosted in Ivory Coast. The Belgian tactician initially announced a 34-man preliminary squad last month, which he has trimmed down to 23 players, who will face the Atlas Lions. Broos cut off 11 names,…
Following the most recent water watch reports, the Department of Water and Sanitation (DWS) has filed criminal charges against some municipalities while directing others to inform their inhabitants that the water may not be safe to drink. 90 municipalities have received non-compliance notifications from the DWS urging them to address the issues mentioned in the Green Drop Report. The department’s Green, Blue, and No Drop Watch Reports, which were released on Tuesday (6 June), show that since the previous reports were published, the quality of the drinking water has decreased and the amount of non-revenue water has increased. The 2022 Green Drop indicated that 50% of municipalities’ wastewater treatment systems were in a critical status, according to the Green Drop Watch Report. The Green, Blue, and No Drop Certification programs serve as means for disseminating regulatory…
The president of South Africa received his Portuguese colleague on Tuesday, June 6. At a news conference, Cyril Ramaphosa gave an overview of the meeting he had the day before with the leaders of Zambia, Senegal, the Republic of Congo, Uganda, and Egypt. Midway through June, the Presidents reportedly indicated that they would be willing to visit Ukraine and Russia. Our journey is actually a peace mission, and we want to refer to it as a road to peace, Ramaphosa said. “Yesterday we met and confirmed that we are now at a stage where we will visit Kiev and Moscow,”…
Palaeontologists said on Monday that they had discovered the oldest known burial site in the world, which contained the remains of a primitive human distant relative once believed to be incapable of complex behaviour. In the Cradle of Humankind, a UNESCO world heritage site close to Johannesburg, researchers led by famous palaeoanthropologist Lee Berger claimed to have found multiple examples of Homo Naledi, a tree-climbing Stone Age hominid, buried around 30 meters (100 feet) underground in a cave system. The researchers stated in a series of yet-to-be peer-reviewed and preprint papers to be published in eLife that: “These are the most ancient interments yet recorded in the hominin record, earlier than evidence of Homo sapiens interments by at least 100 000 years.” The results cast doubt on the conventional wisdom of human evolution, which holds that the growth of larger brains enabled…
Attempts to revive the South African Grand Prix at Kyalami have been abandoned according to reports. A return to Kyalami for the first time since 1993 has been heavily mooted in recent years, with Liberty Media CEO Greg Maffei prematurely declaring a race on the African continent for the current season. But original talks between F1 and then-promoter Warren Scheckter broke down over the financial details involved in the deal. A new promoter, by way of 777 – a sports investment company based in Miami which is best known for its business ventures in soccer – and led by Adam Brown, who…
With 45 days to go until Australia and New Zealand co-host the 2023 FIFA Women’s World Cup (20 July – 20 August 2023), Banyana Banyana head Desiree Ellis has named her 36-member preliminary squad for the global showpiece. Ellis will however still have to narrow down the squad to 23 players, (plus three standby players) that will eventually represent South Africa. “It’s most probably one of the most difficult selections I’ve ever had to make,” the Banyana mentor told SAFA’s official website. “As a coach you always say players must raise their hand and make it difficult. And it has been…
An increase in the death toll from the cholera outbreak has prompted the national Health Department to call on South Africans to practice good personal hygiene. The department has recorded 26 deaths and over 130 positive cases so far. However, despite the downward trend, most of the cases were still being reported from Hammanskraal in northern Tshwane. There is also a high risk of the bacterial disease spreading to other provinces, according to the department. Investigations are still underway to determine the cause of the waterborne disease.
