The Moses Kotane Local Municipality in Mogwase in the North West has vowed to prioritise basic service delivery like water, roads, and the construction of new RDP houses within its 107 villages and two townships in the 2025/26 financial year. The council adopted a R225m budget and IDP prompting the municipality to continue with services to the communities. South Africa’s Water utility, Magalies Water has a new Chief Executive Officer, following the departure of the former CEO Sandile Mkhize. The Magalies Water Board appointed the former Chief Operations Officer, Ofentse Nthutang who has also been acting as the CEO since July 2024 for a period of five years. The National House of Traditional and Khoisan Leaders has implored government to avail funds to support campaigns aimed at reducing the growing number of initiates deaths during the approaching winter customary initiation season. The Eastern Cape has been at the forefront with the highest number of initiates’ deaths in the country, mostly due to dehydration and torture amongst others. The province’s summer initiation season ended in a catastrophic note, with at least 27 initiates losing their lives at various initiation schools, which is lower than the 34 deaths recorded during the same season in the province last year. The South African Social Security Agency (SASSA) says almost 210 000 out of 2 million people tested who are receiving social grants are ineligible to receive the grant in South Africa. The agency working with registered Credit Bureaus, has discovered that there are social grant beneficiaries who appear to be receiving income that was not truthfully disclosed. The Special Investigating Unit (SIU) has commenced its investigation into allegations of maladministration in the affairs of the Department of Defence. The unit is also authorised as per President Cyril Ramaphosa’s Proclamation 260 of 2025 to recover any losses suffered by the state. The North West Provincial Legislature Standing Committee on Public Accounts (SCOPA) has decried the state of the Municipal Public Accounts Committees (MPAC) in four of the five local municipalities within the Bojanala Platinum District Municipality in the province.
