The North West provincial government said it has sent a team to the troubled Ditsobotla Local Municipality, to help it get its affairs in order. The municipality is broke and has failed to pay salaries for the month of May sparking an outrage among workers. Local Government MEC Nono Maloyi made the announcement on the sidelines of the ANC’s National Working Committee meeting in Rustenburg over the weekend. Mineral Resources Minister Gwede Mantashe, made the call during a handover ceremony for four infrastructure projects built by Impala Platinum Mine on Friday at Freedom Park near Rustenburg, North West, as part of its social-labour-plan (SLP). About 17 families in Modderfontein in Kroondal near Rustenburg, North West, have been left homeless, after their shacks caught fire on Monday afternoon. Residents say the fire, caused by an electrical fault, started at about 3pm on Monday and they tried unsuccessfully to stop it from spreading to other shacks. Even the firefighters failed to stop the inferno as it spread through the informal settlement destroying 17 shacks and leaving 30 people, including children without shelter.
