Classes continue to be disrupted at the ORBIT TVET College Mankwe Campus in Mogwase, near Rustenburg, North West by striking students. The students, who have been on strike for the past three weeks, are protesting over student accommodation, expiry of security, catering contracts and unpaid NSFAS allowances. Traffic was disrupted in Rustenburg, North West, as scores of security officers blocked the busy Beyers Naude Road, demanding their salaries from their employer Ndivhuwo Security Training. The demonstrators refused to back down despite high police visibility even after the company said it was committed to paying the salaries soon. The demonstrating workers are also accusing the company of always paying them late and making it difficult for them to feed their families. Some residents of Boshoek near Rustenburg in the North West who took to the streets this week are accusing their councilor of nepotism saying he is side-lining them and recommending only his relatives and friends for employment at the local mine. Community leader Itumeleng Makganye said the councilor is keeping the area impoverished by among others not extending opportunities to residents. A group of business forums from Meriting, Seraleng, Tlhabane, Kroondal and Lefaragatlha on Wednesday failed to disrupt production at Glencore Smelter Mine in Rustenburg after they protested outside the mine gates hoping to get attention from management. As the group sang and danced outside the mining company’s gates, production continued without hindrance inside the premises. David Mantsha, from Setlagole outside Mahikeng in the North West, is the winner of the 2023 N12 Ultra Marathon. He was one of over 2 000 runners who took part in a 50-kilometer race from Klerksdorp to Potchefstroom held on Saturday. The marathon, in its second year, is the third Comrade Marathon qualifier in the North West in addition to the Om Die Dam Marathon and Ottosdal Marathon. A meeting meant to discuss a proposed amalgamation of the Kgetleng Local Municipality into Rustenburg, had to be abandoned after failing to reach a quorum. However, the Kgetleng municipality has vowed to oppose any attempts to incorporate it into Rustenburg. The Municipal Demarcation Committee was supposed to report back on the progress of the proposals submitted on Friday morning, at the council meeting at Rustenburg Civic Centre. According to the proposals, the amalgamation of Kgetleng into Rustenburg was going to result in Rustenburg becoming a metro. A SASSA office in Mogwase, North West is investigating allegations of misconduct and illtreatment of beneficiaries against one of its employees. The employee is accused of being rude and for telling beneficiaries that if it was her money, she would not give any to them. The affected beneficiaries took to social media to complain about the employee’s conduct and complained about how disappointed especially when she is rude to the elderly and those who come to claim their grants. The Brits Magistrate’s Court on Friday postponed the case against Sergeant Tebogo Mpete, accused of brutally slaying his eight-months pregnant ex-wife, Ntombizodwa Khumalo. Magistrate Portia Mampshika refused Mpete’s bail application and confined him to a private prison known only to the authorities. Mpete will appear in court again on May 4 and 5, 2023. The uncle of Ntombizodwa Khumalo, Jeff Khumalo, said the family had been devastated by the death of Ntombizodwa and demanded Mpete not be released from jail. Former Social Development Minister and ANC Women’s League interim leadership structure member Bathabile Dlamini invited more than 500 ‘widows’ living in Marikana North West to discuss the challenges faced by women-headed households and to find solutions.
