The South African Defence Force (SANDF) has guaranteed the public that the mission of a phased withdrawal of soldiers from the Democratic Republic of Congo, DRC, is underway and is unfolding according to plan. This follows some weekend media reports alleging that the soldiers were stranded in Goma, after the buses which were supposed to ferry them to Tanzania, failed to arrive. The South African Weather Service (SAWS) has warned that two cold front systems will impact various parts of the country from Monday to Friday. Police have launched a probe into a robbery and attempted kidnapping incident involving a former investigator in the Senzo Meyiwa murder trial. According to the police, the official who was traveling in a state vehicle in Lombardy East, Johannesburg, was allegedly forced to stop by a group of armed suspects, who attempted to push him into the boot of their vehicle, but he was allegedly able to escape. Her Miss January oil painting which she reportedly created back in 1997 at the tender age of 10 depicting a semi-nude blonde model posing upright, was bought by an anonymous bidder at the Christie’s Auction in New York for a whopping $13.6 million (R246.7m). Deputy President, Paul Mashatile has implored farmers at the NAMPO Harvest Day held in Bothaville, Free State, to join forces with government and address challenges in the Agriculture sector. As part of efforts to curb what the government described as the growing improper disposal of e-waste in communities, the Department of Forestry, Fisheries and Environment, launched the e-Waste Recycle Pilot Project, in Paardekraal, Rustenburg, in the North West. The Project is amongst others meant to establish e-waste recycling systems and to encourage recycling habits within the community. The latest figures revealed by StatsSA’s Quarter Labour Force Survey, has revealed that the country’s unemployment rate went up to 32.9% with the number of those discouraged to seek employment surging to 43.1% in the first quarter of 2025. The data was released by Statistician General Risenga Maluleke in Pretoria on Tuesday. “There was a decrease of 291 000 in the number of employed persons to 16.8 million from 17.1 million in Q4: 2024, while there was an increase of 237 000 in the number of unemployed persons to 8.2 million. In a move to bolster child safety, the Department of Social Development has embarked on a nationwide child protection programme to combat child abuse. According to the department, increased stats of more than 26 000 cases of child abuse and neglect, were reported in the 2024/25 financial year. “Cases of sexual abuse remained dominant in all provinces, with 9 859 cases throughout the country. Deliberate neglect is the second most prevalent in all provinces, with 9 485 cases, followed by physical abuse, with 3 965 recorded cases and 595 of abandonment,” the department indicated.  During the official program’s launch in Thaba Nchu in the Free…
