South African football has been plunged into mourning following the death of Bafana Bafana and Mamelodi Sundowns midfielder Jayden Adams. He was 25.

Reports of Adams’ death emerged on Saturday, with his representatives and guardian confirming the tragic news to Soccer Laduma. The cause of death has not been disclosed.

“At this moment, things are still raw. The family wouldn’t want to be contacted right now; they wouldn’t be able to answer anyone. This passing has ripped everybody apart. Returning from the World Cup just now and then receiving such news…” Adams’ mentor, Brendine Johnson, told Soccer Laduma.

“I had a close conversation with him on Thursday. The guy was really positive about returning after the World Cup and being a CAF champion, knowing what lay ahead. He was prepared. He doesn’t waste time away; he enjoys being at home with his family.”

Johnson appealed for the family’s privacy to be respected during this difficult period.

“So at this moment, I don’t even have words to say, but we ask that the family’s privacy be respected. Yes, I can tell you that he passed on. Nobody expected this,” he said.

Adams established himself as one of South Africa’s brightest midfield talents during his time at Stellenbosch FC before earning a move to Mamelodi Sundowns. His impressive performances also secured him a regular place in the Bafana Bafana squad.

He recently represented South Africa at the FIFA Club World Cup with Mamelodi Sundowns, where his performances further underlined his growing influence at the highest level of the game.

Tributes from teammates, supporters and the wider football community are expected to pour in as South Africans come to terms with the loss of one of the country’s most promising footballers.

Mamelodi Sundowns and the South African Football Association had not yet issued official statements at the time of publication.
