MEXICO CITY — South Africa’s long-awaited return to the FIFA World Cup ended in disappointment on Thursday night as Bafana Bafana fell 2-0 to hosts Mexico in the opening match of the 2026 tournament at a packed Estadio Azteca.

Playing on football’s biggest stage for the first time since 2010, South Africa faced a daunting task against the host nation in front of more than 80,000 passionate Mexican supporters. Despite moments of resilience, Bafana Bafana struggled to gain control of the contest and were ultimately undone by an early mistake and a difficult second half.

Mexico struck first in the ninth minute when Julián Quiñones capitalized on a turnover to score the opening goal of the tournament. The early setback forced South Africa onto the back foot as Mexico dominated possession and dictated the tempo.

South Africa’s hopes of mounting a comeback suffered a major blow shortly after halftime when midfielder Yaya Sithole was shown a red card, reducing Bafana Bafana to 10 men. Despite the numerical disadvantage, the visitors continued to battle and looked for opportunities on the counterattack.

Veteran striker Raúl Jiménez sealed Mexico’s victory in the 67th minute, heading home from close range to send the home crowd into celebration.

The evening became even more challenging for South Africa when substitute Themba Zwane was sent off late in the match, leaving Bafana Bafana with nine players for the closing stages.

While the result was not the start South African fans had hoped for, there were positives to build on as the team showed determination against one of the tournament hosts in a hostile atmosphere. Goalkeeper Ronwen Williams produced several important moments, while Bafana Bafana continued to compete despite being reduced in numbers.

The defeat leaves South Africa searching for points in their remaining Group A fixtures, but the team will be eager to regroup quickly and prove they can compete on the global stage.

For Bafana Bafana, the World Cup journey is far from over, and attention now turns to the crucial matches ahead as they look to keep their hopes of reaching the knockout stages alive.
