Bafana Bafana have registered one of their biggest wins in recent years after thrashing Eritrea 5-0 in Cairo, Egypt, in an away 2027 Africa Cup of Nations qualifier.
Relebohile Mokoena scored a brace, while Sphephelo Sithole, Iqraam Rayners and Luther Singh each netted a goal to ensure that Bafana top Group D with six points from two matches.
Playmaker Mokoena dominated the match and was rewarded with two goals in the first half, ensuring that Bafana went into the break in a strong position.
Despite being ranked 134 places below Bafana, Eritrea did not sit back and gave the South African defence a difficult time, testing goalkeeper Ronwen Williams several times.
Coach Pitso Mosimane was also forced to make an early substitution when Brooklyn Poggenpoel came on for Bathusi Aubaas, who picked up an injury.
Bafana, however, regained their confidence, with Mokoena controlling the tempo and inspiring the team to take a two-goal lead into half-time.
Late substitutes Sithole, Rayners and Singh added further goals in the second half to ensure that Bafana registered back-to-back wins in the qualifiers.
The other Group D opponents, Kenya and Guinea, will play their second matches on Thursday evening in Conakry.
Bafana will now face Egypt in an international friendly in Cairo on Saturday.
