The Premier Soccer League (PSL) has announced betting company Betway, as the new sponsor of the league ahead of the 2024/25 season.
The announcement follows concerns that the previous sponsor and broadcaster DStv, might not continue with its five-year sponsorship deal of the PSL.
“We now have the Betway Premiership as the sponsor of the league. Thank you very much DStv as Premiership sponsor. It’s a three-year sponsorship for about R900 million,” said PSL Chairman Dr Irvin Khoza when announcing the deal at the league headquarters in Parktown.
The new deal comes a year before the five-year deal between PSL and DStv comes to an end.
There are unconfirmed reports that DStv was going to pull out of the deal, due to financial challenges. Khoza said due to the sponsorship uncertainty for the 2024/25 season, the league had to step-in and give clarity.
“I can tell you that the league is starting on the 3rd of August, as indicated. No date is going to be shifted. The CEO will issue the fixtures this afternoon, of what is happening on the 3rd,” explained Khoza.
He described the local soccer market as stubborn and sensitive, which requires the league to always provide comparable content, which is always relevant to the consumers.
Meanwhile, Betway CEO Laurence Michel, says this is the biggest sporting sponsor in the country.
“This partnership is the single biggest investment in South African sport. It underscores Betway’s investment in South African sport, and South African football in particular,” said Michel.
