A heated confrontation between housemates on the reality show Big Brother Mzansi has ignited a contentious debate around gender-based violence (GBV).
The incident followed a physical altercation involving Velile Nongongo, Didintle Mothobi, and Neliswa Ngada, who has since been disqualified from the competition. Shortly after Sunday’s eviction show, the programme announced Ngada’s removal and issued a public statement.
“Following an incident in the house last night and a subsequent investigation, Big Brother has made the decision to disqualify and remove a housemate from the game. The safety and well-being of all housemates remain our highest priority,” the statement read.
The development has divided viewers on social media, with many debating society’s response to gender-based violence when it is perpetrated by women. Some attempted to justify Ngada’s physical attack on Nongongo, citing remarks he made about Mothobi’s abusive past. During an argument, he allegedly said, “No wonder you were abused,” a comment that sparked outrage. Others, however, condemned the assault outright, regardless of the circumstances.
An X user, @sibongisenihope, commented: “She deserves it. Violence doesn’t solve anything. Take accountability for your actions.” Another user, @skpridebts, wrote: “She needs to be disqualified. We can’t be GBV warriors only when it’s women. Men deserve to be protected too.”
Meanwhile, @sphaka_n suggested the situation could have been handled differently, writing: “I have known Neli since varsity in 2012. Absolutely not a violent person, and I just wish someone had stopped her. Really out of character. However, rules are rules and actions have consequences.”
Some viewers also questioned the role of alcohol, attributing the escalation to the housemates’ alleged intoxication.
Ngada’s disqualification left fellow contestants visibly emotional, with many expressing shock at her sudden exit from the show.
