Bonnie Tyler, the iconic Welsh rock singer whose powerful voice and chart-topping hits such as “Total Eclipse of the Heart” and “Holding Out for a Hero” defined an era of 1980s music, has died. She was 75.

Tyler died on Wednesday while receiving treatment in a hospital in Portugal, according to a statement released on her official website.

“Bonnie’s family and team are heartbroken to announce that Bonnie unexpectedly passed away last night in hospital in Portugal as a result of the illness that she was being treated for,” the statement read. The family also requested privacy as they grieve and said that a further statement would be issued in due course.

Born Gaynor Hopkins in Skewen, South Wales, Tyler rose to international fame with her distinctive raspy voice and emotionally charged performances. Her breakthrough came with the 1977 hit “It’s a Heartache,” but it was her collaboration with songwriter Jim Steinman that cemented her place in music history. The epic ballad “Total Eclipse of the Heart” became a global phenomenon in 1983, topping charts around the world and remaining one of the most recognisable songs of its generation.

She followed that success with “Holding Out for a Hero,” a high-energy anthem featured in the 1984 film Footloose. The song has since become a pop culture staple, appearing in numerous films, television shows, and commercials.

Despite the changing landscape of the music industry, Tyler continued recording and touring for decades. She represented the United Kingdom at the Eurovision Song Contest in 2013 and was appointed a Member of the Order of the British Empire (MBE) in 2022 for her services to music.

In recent months, Tyler had been battling serious health issues following emergency intestinal surgery in Portugal. While her condition had shown signs of improvement after intensive care, her death came as an unexpected shock to family, friends, and fans around the world.

Tributes have begun pouring in from fellow musicians, public figures, and admirers celebrating Tyler’s remarkable career and enduring legacy. Her unmistakable voice, powerful performances, and timeless songs have left an indelible mark on rock and pop music, ensuring that her influence will continue to inspire generations of artists and fans alike.
