This diplomatic tiff follows the BRICS Leaders’ Summit held in Rio de Janeiro, where Lula underscored Brazil’s sovereignty amid accusations of undemocratic actions linked to the trial of former President Jair Bolsonaro.
Trump’s announcement, shared via Truth Social, claims the tariff is a direct response to what he calls Brazil’s “insidious attacks on free elections” and censorship affecting American companies.
