Brighton & Hove Albion handed Premier League champions Arsenal their first defeat of the season with a stunning 3-0 victory at the Amex Stadium on Saturday.
The Seagulls produced another impressive performance to beat Arsenal for the third consecutive season, following victories over Liverpool last season and Manchester City in the 2024/25 campaign.
Pascal Gross opened the scoring before 19-year-old Charalampos Kostoulas continued his impressive run of form by scoring his third goal in three matches. Deadline-day signing Chema Andres completed the rout with his first Brighton goal on his first start.
The defeat ended Arsenal’s perfect start and denied Mikel Arteta’s side the opportunity to win their first eight games of a season for the first time in 123 years.
Brighton have now scored 16 goals in their opening five matches, underlining their attacking form.
“We won the ball high up and attacked really fast,” Gross told BBC Match of the Day.
Arteta admitted his side were well below their usual standards.
“Credit to Brighton for what they have done. I think we were very far from our level,” he said.
The defeat was Arsenal’s first three-goal loss in the Premier League since Brighton also beat them 3-0 in May 2023.
Villa deepen Tottenham’s struggles
Aston Villa beat Tottenham Hotspur 3-2 to hand manager Unai Emery a third consecutive victory at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium since the start of last season.
Johan Manzambi put Villa ahead in first-half stoppage time before Nicolas Jackson doubled the lead. Emiliano Buendia then added a spectacular third.
Tottenham responded through Conor Gallagher and Jan Paul van Hecke, but Villa held on for the victory.
The result leaves Spurs with two points and a goal difference of -6 after five matches — their worst start to a season.
“There are things that are not acceptable and we have to do better,” Spurs captain Micky van de Ven said.
Coventry end 25-year wait for Premier League goal
Coventry City secured their first Premier League victory of the season with a 1-0 win over Nottingham Forest.
Jay Dasilva scored his first goal for the club in his 127th appearance, ending Coventry’s 25-year wait for a Premier League goal.
The goal also came after goalkeeper Carl Rushworth launched a long pass forward, with Dasilva controlling brilliantly before finishing.
Coventry had lost their opening four matches of the season before Saturday’s victory.
Everton remain unbeaten
Everton maintained their unbeaten start to the season with a 1-0 victory over 10-man Ipswich Town.
Thierno Barry scored the only goal in the 11th minute, while goalkeeper Jordan Pickford produced several important saves to preserve Everton’s lead.
Ipswich’s Abdul Fatawu was sent off after receiving two yellow cards, with the second for simulation.
The result means Everton have started a season unbeaten after seven matches for only the third time this century.
Newcastle end Hull’s unbeaten run
Newcastle United recovered from their 4-1 defeat by Leeds United by beating Hull City 2-1.
Joe Willock opened the scoring in the third minute before Lewis Hall doubled Newcastle’s advantage four minutes later.
Hull pulled one back through Mohamed-Ali Cho and pushed for an equaliser, but Newcastle held on despite facing 21 shots.
The defeat ended Hull’s unbeaten start to the campaign after an impressive run that included a victory over Manchester United and draws against Aston Villa and Chelsea.
