The bail application of 45-year-old Oupa “Brown” Mogotsi has been postponed to 1 September 2026 to allow Correctional Services to provide the Johannesburg Magistrates’ Court with a detailed report on an alleged escape plan.
The National Prosecuting Authority (NPA) says the alleged plan was intercepted by correctional authorities.
During proceedings on Tuesday, prosecutor Thami Mpekana read an affidavit from the investigating officer into the record. According to the affidavit, a “Correctional Services official alerted the investigator that Mogotsi was allegedly planning to escape”.
The court was told that arrangements were subsequently made to prevent the accused from escaping.
Mogotsi is facing charges including unlawful possession of a firearm and ammunition, discharging a firearm in a built-up area, defeating or obstructing the administration of justice, and perjury.
The charges stem from an incident on 3 November 2025, when Mogotsi allegedly reported to police that he had been pursued by occupants of a bakkie while driving alone in Vosloorus.
He allegedly told police that the occupants fired several shots at his vehicle, forcing him to stop and flee on foot.
The NPA says Mogotsi remains in custody pending the continuation of his bail application.
Mpekana said the State would continue placing relevant information before the court and ensure that the matter proceeds in accordance with the law.
The bail application will resume on 1 September.
