Former Public Protector Advocate Busisiwe Mkhwebane has joined the uMkhonto weSizwe Party (MK) and appointed its provincial Convenor in Mpumalanga, two weeks after resigning from the Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF).
Mkhwebane follows the likes of former EFF Deputy President Floyd Shivhambu and Member of Parliament, Mzwanele Manyi.
Mkhwebane’s new home was announced during the MK’s party media briefing in Sandton, where the party’s General Secretary Sfiso Maseko also revealed that former KwaZulu-Natal Premier Willies Mchunu had joined the party after resigning from the African National Congress and would be its Convenor in the province.
Maseko described Mkhwebane as a seasoned public servant and a true fighter for justice and equal rights.
He said the MK is the official opposition party in Mpumalanga and believes that the former PP will bring changes to the party and the province.
“She is the former Public Protector who was unfairly removed for confronting the status quo, asking necessary and relevant questions to the sitting head of state.
Advocate Mkhwebane’s consistency, composure and professionalism will guide the province of Mpumalanga into absolute stability and progress,” said Maseko.
Speaking at the briefing, Mkhwebane told the media that she joined MK because of its understanding of the persecution of black people.
“I could relate to the constitution of uMkhonto weSizwe and it is what needs to be done to liberate our people.
Angilahlekanga, ngise khaya (I’m not lost, I’m home) I decided to accept the invitation,” said Mkhwebane.
Mkhwebane resigned from the red berets two weeks ago.
In a statement posted on her X account, she said “after careful consideration and talking to her family, she was advised that she needed to go away, spend time with them and continue to fight for the vulnerable where possible.”
