The Brits Magistrate’s Court on Friday postponed the case against Sergeant Tebogo Mpete, accused of brutally slaying his eight-months pregnant ex-wife, Ntombizodwa Khumalo.
Magistrate Portia Mampshika refused Mpete’s bail application and confined him to a private prison known only to the authorities. Mpete will appear in court again on May 4 and 5, 2023.
The uncle of Ntombizodwa Khumalo, Jeff Khumalo, said the family had been devastated by the death of Ntombizodwa and demanded Mpete not be released from jail.
He said justice must be served on the person who killed his sister’s daughter ‘cold bloodedly, like a dog’.
Khumalo said he was unhappy about the proceedings, alleging that Mpete is receiving special treatment in prison and questioned the Magistrate’s decision to keep him in a private prison. He also complained that Mpete was not handcuffed, walking freely like a President while the family is mourning the loss of their daughter.
African National Congress (ANC) Women’s League Provincial Task team leader, Lenah Medupe, has also alleged that Mpete is receiving special treatment, urging the government to intervene.
According to Medupe, she no longer trusts the justice system since the accused will be sent to a private prison for being a policeman.
