Coalition governments where there is no outright majority win is not something that the ANC promotes – ANC national chairperson Gwede Mantashe

More than 50 African National Congress (ANC) branch members and regional leadership in the Dr. Kenneth Kaunda District in the North West asked tough questions at the ANC’s National Working Committee (NWC) meeting, which was held in the North West over the weekend.

Ahead of the upcoming 2024 National Elections, the meeting was intended to assess the status of the branches and regions.

The ANC members complained about the failure of the Interim Regional Committee, allegedly fraudulently elected councillors, fraud in the municipalities and members who allow gangsterism to control the administration of the Matlosana Local Municipality.

National chairperson Gwede Mantashe, who was the team leader, explained that they held a prolonged closed session meeting because they wanted solutions to all the problems raised from the Dr. Kenneth Kaunda meeting.

“Solution will not come from outside, they are going to come here. It is the structures here that will engage and resolve problems, including the Motlanthe Commission report, we are not going to come with a bag of solutions and resolve them here,” he said.

Given that only 384 of its 403 branches attended the ANC’s national conference in December, Mantashe said the purpose of the meetings was to ensure the ANC’s continued success in the upcoming elections.

According to Mantashe, going into a coalition government if there is no majority win will never be something that the ANC promotes.

“We are working on an outright majority, coalitions are not a result, they are a consequence, that is how you manage consequences, so we can’t work for failure we work for winning outright that is what we are working for,” he said.

Mantashe also mentioned that the ANC will allow the law to take its course regarding the cases of two council members from the same region who are facing criminal charges.

“Those comrades of ours are arrested they are not left alone because they are the members of the ANC they are arrested, they are in prison and if they are out of prison they are busy with cases let them go through the courts and if they are found guilty they must be imprisoned like any other citizen,” Mantashe said.
