The Communication Workers Union (CWU) has taken the drastic step of expelling its Secretary General, Aubrey Tshabalala, with immediate effect. The decision, which has sent ripples through the union and the broader labour community, was prompted by allegations that Tshabalala had brought the union into disrepute during a critical period for its members.
According to a letter addressed to Tshabalala, the union accuses him of continuing to act in his official capacity while under suspension—an act deemed both irresponsible and damaging. His engagement with the Business Rescue Practitioners of the South African Post Office allegedly caused confusion amid ongoing business rescue processes, undermining the stability and rights of CWU members who are employed within the beleaguered postal service.
Furthermore, the letter reveals that Tshabalala had initiated numerous litigation efforts on behalf of the CWU without securing the necessary mandates or authority from the union’s leadership. This unilateral decision-making not only put the CWU at risk but also led to the union incurring cost orders exceeding R600,000, a substantial financial burden that could impact its operational capabilities.
