The North-West University (NWU) has appointed a three-time Comrades Marathon and Internationally acclaimed athlete Tete Dijana, as a protection officer at its Mahikeng Campus, effective from April 1, 2026.
The University has described Dijana as a symbol of endurance, discipline, humility, and excellence in the country and beyond, adding that his remarkable athletic achievements have inspired millions, and his journey reflects resilience and determination of the highest order.
Speaking on YOUFM, the university’s communications Manager Oscar Mosiane said that the decision was long overdue.
“His appointment reflects our belief that excellence is not confined to titles or accolades, but is embodied in character, discipline, and service.
Tete’s presence at our Mahikeng Campus has and will continue to inspire both staff and students, reminding us that greatness and humility can walk hand in hand,” said Mosiane.
He reiterated the institution’s Principal and Vice-Chancellor, Professor Bismark Tyobeka’s sentiments that Dijana’s appointment is testament to the NWU’s commitment to recognising and embracing individuals who exemplify its core values of responsibility, integrity, accountability, and perseverance.
“Protection officers are the custodians of safety on our campuses.
They are often the first point of contact for students and visitors.
To have an individual of his stature join this critical function is both a privilege and a powerful statement about service and community,” noted Professor Tyobeka.
According to the institution, Dijana will now earn a better salary and receive all the benefits similar to those that are provided to all other protection service workers at the university.
While Dijana is employed as a protection officer, the NWU has committed to leverage on his athletics skills and experience, and involve him in the development of student athletes for high-performance sport, especially athletics.
“Dijana’s achievements on the international athletics stage have brought immense pride to the nation, his new role affirms the dignity of work and the university’s appreciation for every member of its community who contributes to a safe and enabling learning environment,” remarked the institution.
Dijana won the men’s 2025 Comrades Marathon after crossing the finish line at a time of 05:25:28 ahead of Piet Wiersma, who won the race a year earlier.
He also won the race twice in 2022 and 2023, respectively.
