A meeting meant to discuss a proposed amalgamation of the Kgetleng Local Municipality into Rustenburg, had to be abandoned after failing to reach a quorum.

However, the Kgetleng municipality has vowed to oppose any attempts to incorporate it into Rustenburg.

The Municipal Demarcation Committee was supposed to report back on the progress of the proposals submitted on Friday morning, at the council meeting at Rustenburg Civic Centre.

According to the proposals, the amalgamation of Kgetleng into Rustenburg was going to result in Rustenburg becoming a metro.

While most political parties and civic formations have rejected the proposal, the Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF) said it supported the idea, saying it would benefit residents of Kgetleng whom it claimed are currently marginalised by white councillors.

EFF Councillor Nono Phalole said incorporating Kgetleng into Rustenburg would benefit residents she claims are currently marginalised.

“We believe that incorporating this municipality will benefit our people since its budget will be included, and also it has so many farmers so our people will get access to economic development, hence we agree with the amalgamation, “said Phalole.

Phalole added that the Kgetleng Municipality has six wards, and those will come in handy. She said they’re disappointed by the adjournment of the council meeting as they came in prepared on Friday.

“Firstly, when the council started the Speaker tabled a demarcation item, and it took almost sixty minutes to an hour just presenting the item. Then after the Whip of council requested a coalition caucus which took forever, and when they came back they requested that the item be withdrawn from the agenda.

“So as the EFF, we wanted answers as to why they would withdraw it at the eleventh hour, but no one had answers, not even the Speaker himself,” said Phalole.
