Mpumalanga police have opened a case of culpable homicide following the tragic death of a five-year-old learner from Thanda Primary School in Emjejane, Nkomazi.
The Grade R pupil was reportedly struck by a scholar transport bus on Thursday afternoon. According to the provincial Department of Education, learners were preparing to board the bus after school when the child was accidentally hit while in the vehicle’s blind spot as it was reversing.
Investigations into the incident are ongoing. Officials from the Department of Education are expected to visit the school and meet with the family of the deceased later today. The visit is intended to collect further details about the circumstances surrounding the accident and to provide support to those affected.
The department extended its heartfelt condolences to the grieving family and the entire school community.
