With R300 million in damage caused by the recent floods, anxieties are growing as more rain is predicted with Freddy’s arrival.
While accurate and timely predictions of tropical cyclone systems are typically uncertain, the South African Weather Service (Saws) expects Tropical Cyclone Freddy to bring 200mm to 400mm of rain to Limpopo and Mpumalanga’s Lowveld and escarpment areas from early Saturday, February 25, until next Monday.
The province is still struggling from the massive rains and flooding, which badly destroyed schools, healthcare facilities, dwellings, and roads and bridges throughout the Ehlanzeni area.
The greatest rains and flooding began on February 8, and the damage is expected to be R300 million, according to Mandla Msibi, MEC for the Department of Co-operative Governance and Traditional Affairs.
