Defending champions Arsenal begin their Premier League title defence against newly promoted Coventry City at the Emirates Stadium on Friday night.

Manager Mikel Arteta says his side are determined to retain the title, but insists they will have to earn the right to challenge for the trophy again by maintaining high standards throughout the season.

Arteta says he is more excited and hungry than ever to get the new campaign underway.

“I feel good, different, hopefully better. I’m more excited than ever, hungrier than ever. I can’t wait to start the Premier League at home in front of our supporters, have a great performance and win the match.”

The Arsenal boss says strengthening the squad remains a priority, particularly in defence following William Saliba’s long-term injury.

“The ambition is to improve the squad. We have a really specific issue in the backline, especially with the long-term injury of Wilo [Saliba] and the fact that we miss one more defender.”

Arteta confirmed that Bukayo Saka and Declan Rice are available for the opener, while Jurrien Timber is still working his way back to full team training.

New signing Bruno Guimaraes is also being assessed ahead of the match.

Arteta praised Coventry manager Frank Lampard for his work in guiding the club back to the Premier League and expects a difficult opening fixture.

He says Arsenal cannot afford to rest on their achievements from last season.

“From today, no, because we start from scratch, from zero tomorrow, and we’re going to have to prove we have the level to go back to that position again.”
