Dr Letlape joins ActionSA

ActionSA has appointed former Health Professionals Council of South Africa head and former ANC member Dr Kgosi Letlape as the party’s candidate for the health portfolio in Parliament.

The announcement was made by party leader Herman Mashaba, during a media briefing in Johannesburg where he also introduced ActionSA #TeamFix SA.

Letlape resigned from the ANC last week, and cited his unhappiness regarding President Cyril Ramaphosa’s intention to sign the National Health Insurance Bill into law after it was voted last year in parliament.

He has a wealth of experience in the health sector, having founded the Africa Medical Association, served as president of the World Medical Association and he currently holds a position as member of Global Hygiene Council.

Letlape is also the first black Ophthalmologist in South Africa, which he achieved at the height of apartheid.

According to Mashaba, Letlape was involved in the development of Action SA’s policies.

“The wealth of his expertise has been instrumental in the development of ActionSA Health care policy culminating in an expert-led process that relied on engagements with health care leaders like Dr Letlape.

“Having co-founded the Africa Harm Reduction Alliance which focuses on creating awareness and educating people about the need to reduce harm and promote well-being, Dr Letlape is well equipped to realize our vision where healthcare is not only reactive but also proactively managed to improve the quality of life of our people.

“Along with healthcare we’ll take a laser like focus on community welfare including drugs and substance abuse,” said Mashaba.

Mashaba said he has confidence in the other team members and that they’re ready to start work after the 2024 general elections.

“The team brings the necessary skills and experience for us to turn South Africa around and restore it to a path of prosperity and presents a credible alternative to the current failed political establishment,” added Mashaba.
