Springboks lock Eben Etzebeth has been handed a 12-week ban by the Quilter Nations Series disciplinary committee after being found guilty of making intentional contact with the eye of Wales flanker Alex Mann during South Africa’s 73–0 win two weeks ago. The incident occurred in the final minutes of the match, resulting in Etzebeth being shown a red card on the field.

Following a post-match review, match officials referred the matter to a disciplinary panel. After analysing video footage and submissions made during Etzebeth’s virtual appearance, the committee ruled that the action constituted foul play under Law 9.12. They determined an 18-week mid-range entry point was appropriate, later reducing it to 12 weeks due to mitigating factors, including Etzebeth’s good disciplinary record and conduct during the hearing.

Etzebeth has strongly denied intentionally gouging Mann’s eye, insisting the contact was accidental after Mann allegedly struck him and repeatedly grabbed his jersey.
“It all happened very quickly,” Etzebeth said. “I tried to push him away from my shoulder, and my hand slipped into his face. The slow-motion replay makes it look deliberate, but that wasn’t the case.”

Despite Etzebeth’s claims, Mann has not been cited or sanctioned for his role in the altercation.

The ban means Etzebeth will miss 12 matches for the Sharks, including key clashes in the EPCR Champions Cup and United Rugby Championship—delivering a major blow to both the franchise and Springbok preparations ahead of the international window.

SA Rugby and the Sharks have not yet issued an official response or indicated whether they intend to appeal the ruling.
