The death toll following a shooting incident at a tavern in Pienaar, outside Nelspruit in Mpumalanga, has risen to eight.

This after one of the six people who was shot during the incident, succumbed to his injuries in hospital.

“Today, around 04h00 am, there was a shooting incident in Pienaar whereby six people were fatally shot at the scene (one female and five males) whilst two other victims (male and female) succumbed to their injuries later in hospital.

Three other victims (two males and a female) are still receiving medical treatment after sustaining some injuries during the incident.

Two VW Polo’s were also found at the scene with bullet holes and one of the victims was found dead inside one of the vehicles,” read a police statement.

In addition, the police said a 72-hour plan has been activated following the incident, and the motive behind the shooting is still unknown at this stage.

Meanwhile, the Acting Provincial Commissioner Major General Zeph Mkhwanazi has condemned the incident and ordered for the swift arrest of the perpetrators.

“We are very much concerned about these shooting incidents that have occurred recently in our province.

However, we are working around the clock to ensure that perpetrators thereof are swiftly brought to book,” said Mkhwanazi.
