The City of Ekurhuleni has confirmed that its Member of the Mayoral Committee (MMC) for Roads and Transport Management, Andile Mngwevu, is missing following a flooding incident in Mozambique.

According to the city’ statement released on Sunday, Mngwevu was travelling in the Chokwé area when a vehicle carrying five people was swept away by floodwaters. The circumstances surrounding the incident remain unclear.

The city said a South African rescue mission deployed to Mozambique has managed to establish contact with one of the five occupants who were in the vehicle at the time of the incident. However, the status and whereabouts of Mngwevu and the remaining occupants have not yet been confirmed.

Authorities from South Africa are working closely with local Mozambican officials and emergency services as search and verification efforts continue. The City of Ekurhuleni said it remains in constant contact with the Department of International Relations and Cooperation (DIRCO) and other national structures to coordinate support and information-sharing.

The Office of the Executive Mayor, in collaboration with national government, has also facilitated support for Mngwevu’s spouse, who arrived in Mozambique on Friday night. National authorities are further exploring additional assistance, including security and possible evacuation support, as more information becomes available.

The city appealed to the public and the media to respect the privacy of the Mngwevu family during what it described as a “profoundly difficult time” and urged against speculation while official efforts to establish the facts continue.

Further updates will be communicated through official city channels once more information is confirmed.
