A smartwatch belonging to slain runner Elizabeth “Tsontso” Moselakgomo allegedly passed through several hands before being advertised on Facebook Marketplace, as three men face charges linked to the device.

Two of the accused have been granted bail of R10,000 each by the Kempton Park Magistrate’s Court, while the state is opposing bail for the remaining accused.

Court proceedings have focused on how the smartwatch allegedly changed hands after being obtained from an unidentified individual.

According to information presented in court, the first accused, who allegedly trades in pawned goods, bought the device before selling it to the second accused, a South African national.

The second accused allegedly reset the smartwatch and connected it to his Gmail account before arranging its sale to the third accused. The third accused reportedly paid R4,000 by bank transfer, collected the device three days later and advertised it on Facebook Marketplace.

The watch was subsequently purchased by another person who, according to the information presented, could not be linked to the alleged criminal activity.

Bail decisions differ

The court granted bail of R10,000 each to the second and third accused. The state is opposing bail for the first accused.

The third accused is a Nigerian national, and his immigration status is awaiting verification by the Department of Home Affairs.

The matter has been postponed to 19 October.

Moselakgomo’s body was found beside the R21 in September after she was reported missing following an afternoon run in Kempton Park.
