The Speaker of the Ditsobotla Local Municipality in the North West, Fikile Jakeni has passed away after a short illness.
His passing was confirmed by the Lichtenburg-based municipality on Friday. Ditsobotla local municipality Mayor, Itumeleng Lethoko, described Jakeni as a friend, and a mentor to all those who had the privilege of working alongside him, and that he will be remembered for his dedication to the municipality.
“The devastating news was confirmed by his beloved family on Thursday evening, 01 June 2023. Jakeni was more than a Speaker for our municipality; he was a beacon of wisdom and strength. He dedicated his life to the service of the people of Ditsobotla, and his influence reached far beyond the confines of our local region. His unwavering dedication to public service and his deep-seated passion for social justice have indelibly shaped our community.
“He was a friend, a mentor, and a guide to all of us who had the privilege of working alongside him. His contribution to our community is immeasurable and his absence in our hearts is unbearable. In these moments of deep sorrow and loss, we stand in solidarity with the Jakeni family.
“We share in their grief and extend our most heartfelt condolences. As we mourn this monumental loss, we also remember and celebrate the remarkable life of Mr. Jakeni, whose legacy will forever be etched in the history of Ditsobotla,” Lethoko said.
Ronald Matlholoa was elected acting speaker earlier this week during Jakeni’s absence.
Details regarding Jakeni’s funeral and memorial service will be shared in due course.
