Five people were killed in an accident on the R49 road between Zeerust and Mahikeng on Monday morning.

According to the North West Department of Community Safety and Transport, the accident occurred shortly after midnight on the Riviera Park bridge near the Rugby Stadium. Both vehicles were reportedly heading towards the Mahikeng CBD.

According to the spokesperson for the Department, Alphius Keonyaditse, one car drove into another while it was overtaking it causing the crash.

“Three people were declared deceased at the scene of the accident whilst the other two passed on at the hospital. The deceased include one of the drivers. The other two who were hospitalised suffered serious injuries,” he said.

The MEC for the North West Department of Community Safety and Transport Management, Sello Lehari,  also expressed condolences to the bereaved families and wished the injured a speedy recovery.

The department said a case of culpable homicide has been opened with the police.
