Five people were killed in a head-on collision on Saturday night on the N4 road near Moedwil west of Rustenburg in the North West.

The accident happened about 4 kilometres outside the farming area of Moedwil, where 7 people lost their lives in a car collision a month ago.

It is alleged that a driver tried to overtake on a yellow lane and lost control of the vehicle colliding with an oncoming car.

A critically injured woman was airlifted to Milpark Hospital in Johannesburg and the other to a health facility in Rustenburg.

North West Transport department Spokesperson Alpheus Koonyaditse said it took several hours to remove the entrapped bodies from the wreckage.

The MEC for the Department of Community Safety and Transport Management, Sello Lehari sent his condolences to the bereaved families and wished the injured a speedy recovery.

The acting Chief Director for Transport Regulations Paul Stone has appealed to road users to be extra careful when driving especially at night.

Stone said law enforcement in the Province will not tolerate any violation of traffic regulations and appealed to motorists to do everything to ensure that the number of road accidents are reduced.
