The family of the late former Executive Mayor of the City of Tshwane, Dr Murunwa Makwarela, is appealing for space and time to mourn his passing.
This after the 52-year-old Makwarela passed away in the early hours of Tuesday morning at the Leratong hospital in Krugersdorp after a short illness.
“We’re devastated as a family and we’re still trying to compose and try to get a proper understanding on the matter, but the news is very true.
“He leaves behind his wife, two daughters whom he loved so much. We really appreciate and acknowledge everyone’s condolences.
“We ask for privacy until we offer an official statement,” said family spokesperson, Reverand Abel Dube.
Makwarela, who is also the former Speaker of Council, served as Executive Mayor in March 2003.
Current Speaker, Mncedi Ndzwanana, visited the family to offer the city’s condolences.
“It is a sad day for us because we have lost an important person. He was a former Speaker, former Mayor, and Councillor of Tshwane.
“It is indeed a sad day for the councillors, staff, communities, and the Office of the Speaker because he is my predecessor.
“To the family, friends, and the community at large; condolences,” said Ndzwanana.
