In the murder case of popular South African DJ Oupa John Sefoka, known as DJ Sumbody, police have arrested four individuals linked to the high-profile killing. The suspects appeared in the Alexandra Magistrate’s Court in Johannesburg, with the case raising pressing questions not only about the crime itself but also about political ties that may complicate the investigation.

The national police spokesperson, Athlenda Mathe, expressed optimism about the progress made on the case, stating, “Well done to the men and women in blue, not only the political killing task team but also Gauteng organised crime for ensuring that they bring a watertight case that will be able to stand in court.” She highlighted the meticulous nature of gathering evidence, linking firearms from the Armand Swart case to DJ Sumbody’s murder, suggesting strong ties between the suspects and the brutal crime that took place.

“We have overwhelming evidence against these suspects. Hopefully, we will see a conviction,” Mathe added, underscoring the hope that a successful prosecution could provide closure to the bereaved family.

The tragic death of DJ Sumbody, who was shot in a hail of bullets in Woodmead in November 2022, has shaken the music industry and community at large. According to the police, three of the apprehended suspects are believed to be hitmen, while one is suspected of having ordered the hit.

In a parallel development, Kenny Kunene, the deputy leader of the Patriotic Alliance (PA) and Johannesburg’s MMC for Transport, was suspended for one month from his political activities. This suspension follows reports that he was present at the home of one of the murder suspects during a police raid. Kunene was found waiting outside Katiso Molefe’s residence in Sandton, leading to questions regarding his connections to the case.

Kunene has denied any personal relationship with Molefe, asserting that he was only facilitating an exclusive interview between Molefe and a journalist from Africa News Global. The leader of the Patriotic Alliance, Gayton McKenzie, confirmed the suspension, stating, “Kunene will be investigated by lawyers of good character. While he’s being investigated, I’m going to remove him from being an MMC. I’m going to write to them. I’m also going to tell him to stand back from politics for one month until the investigation is complete.”
