The Gauteng Department of Health has urged ex-mine workers to register for possible social security benefits and medical surveillance.

This initiative, which is in partnership with the Medical Bureau for Occupational Diseases and other stakeholders, aims to trace the ex-miners who may qualify for pensions due to them.

The Department’ spokesperson, Motalatale Modiba said phase one of the programme which will be rolled out across the province, will begin at the West Rand District due to an increased mining activity in the area.

“The Department’s database shows that there are over 2 000       ex-mine workers in the West Rand alone, with unclaimed benefits while 7 500 more across Gauteng are yet to receive what is rightfully theirs,” Modiba explained.

In addition, he said the other focus of the programme will be to screen the former workers for diseases like silicosis, hearing loss and tuberculosis amongst others.

Modiba also indicated that in instances where the ex-miner is deceased, the families will be eligible for the payouts.

The registration period which started on Monday, 24 March, will close on the 5th of April 2025 at selected key points around sub-districts in West Rand.

“The Department calls on ex-mine workers to visit Khutsong Extension 4 Multi-Purpose Civic Centre, Molatlhegi Hall in Kokosi, Ramosa Hall in Mohlakeng, Chief Mogale Hall in Kagiso and Carletonville Civic Centre to register and undergo free medical screenings during the mentioned dates.

To facilitate the process, attendees should bring all identification documents they have including their mineworker’s Identity card, ID documents and any paperwork received from their mining companies,” explained Modiba.

The Department says it is committed to ensure that the ex-miners receive the necessary healthcare and financial support, especially for their contribution to the country’s economy.
