The Gauteng Department of Education will on Saturday evaluate the progress of the Safe School Campaign that was implemented under the Operation Khutla Molao, to fight violence, restore law and order in schools around the province.

This will happen at a School Safety Indaba in Boksburg, hosted by MEC Matome Chiloane.

The Department spokesperson Steve Mabona said the Indaba will also develop further interventions for emerging threats and provide a status update on identified high-risk schools in the province on what the department has done so far and how the identified schools will be managed.

Mabona added that the engagement will also mobilize different stakeholders to safeguard schools against criminal activities, especially during the holidays.

Meanwhile, Chiloane has condemned two alleged rape incidents that occurred at the Hope Learners with Special Educational Needs (LSEN) in Westcliffe, Johannesburg.

The first alleged incident happened on 14 February this year where a grade 9 boy learner allegedly raped a Grade 8 girl learner.

The latest one allegedly happened last month where a Grade 12 pupil raped another Grade 4 boy at the n the school facility.

The alleged perpetrators have been suspended and two cases of raped were opened with the police.

“We strongly condemn all acts of misconduct, which seek to undermine the dignity of our learning institutions.

Therefore, we are hopeful that this investigation will assist in uprooting instances of ill-discipline and maladministration.

Schools are urged to enforce their codes of conduct to deal with disciplinary matters, and learner ill-discipline will not be tolerated in our schools,” said Chiloane.

The MEC also appealed to parents and the school staff to work together to educate learners about a conducive environment.
