Sarah Mabotsa, who has been serving as the Economic Development MMC in the City of Tshwane, may have bitten off more than she could chew after the GOOD Party fired her as a councillor and terminated her membership for allegedly double-dipping.
Mabotsa found herself in trouble after accepting the nomination as Rise Mzansi’s mayoral candidate while still serving on the GOOD Party’s ticket.
“GOOD’s leadership has informed the Executive Mayor and City Manager of the City of Tshwane that Sarah Mabotsa’s membership of the party has been terminated, and that she should be removed as a councillor and therefore as the MMC for Economic Development,” said the GOOD Party.
The GOOD Party said Mabotsa had breached its ethical standards.
“The termination follows breaches of the party’s Constitution. Serving as a public representative is a privilege that comes with responsibilities and accountability to the people whom representatives are elected to represent. This is a non-negotiable principle regardless of position or proximity to an election,” said the party.
The GOOD Party claims to have an undertaking from Rise Mzansi that it will also remove Mabotsa as its mayoral candidate.
“In view of GOOD’s cooperation agreement with RISE Mzansi, Mabotsa will be withdrawn as the RISE mayoral candidate for Tshwane. The parties stand together in their commitment to nominate ethical and credible leaders. The Tshwane City Manager confirmed this morning that his office would inform the IEC of the council vacancy today,” said the party.
The City of Tshwane has confirmed Mabotsa’s removal, with Mayor Nasiphi Moya thanking her for her service.
It remains to be seen whether Moya’s ActionSA will accommodate Mabotsa as a proportional representation councillor. ActionSA has been poaching members from other parties and giving them positions on arrival, with Ayanda Allie being the latest recruit and having been catapulted to the forefront of the party.
Mabotsa could not be reached for comment.
